The Fourth Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture was presented by President of South Africa Thabo Mbeki.
The venue for the lecture was the Linder Auditorium at the University of the Witwatersrand. Mr Mbeki’s topic was “Reconstructing our soul”.
Mr Mbeki was chosen by Nelson Mandela to be the first Deputy President of the new Government of National Unity. At the 50th Conference of the ANC at Mafikeng in 1997 he was elected President of the ANC, and inaugurated as President of South Africa in June 1999. He was re-elected in 2004.
He is an international statesman who has played a leading role in issues of development, good governance and peacemaking. He takes a prominent position at world bodies such as the United Nations, the Commonwealth and the Non-Aligned Movement.
