July 20, 2010 – As Morgan Freeman prepares to leave South Africa after participating in the six-day ‘Bikers for Mandela Day’ tour, we would like to join him in thanking all who were involved.

“Without the enthusiastic participation of the bikers, the organisers, the communities that hosted us and the sponsors, the rally would not have been the tremendous success it was,” said Sello Hatang, the Foundation’s Information and Communication Manager.

A group of 20 motorbike riders and a support team of around 20 more people, including Mr Freeman, left from the Nelson Mandela Foundation offices last Monday and arrived in Cape Town on Sunday, after taking part in nine community activities in three provinces.

One of the main objectives of the ride was to demonstrate the simplicity of implementing the Mandela Day campaign. The activities ranged from chopping vegetables and playing soccer with orphans, to building a fence and levelling an access road.

“The organisers were particularly encouraged by the residents of small communities who waited at the side of the road to welcome us. En route, we were told of many plans by community members to help each other,” Hatang said.

“Let’s all try and make every day a Mandela Day.”
