The Mandela Day Libraries Project, which began in 2011 with the establishment of 13 libraries in primary schools throughout South Africa, kicked off its 2012 programme with the opening of two new container libraries in August.

A container library opened on 6 August in Gugulethu, Western Cape and another on 8 August in Meadowlands, Soweto. Mrs Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former UN Commissioner of Human Rights was the guest of honour at both opening events.
