Nelson Mandela Foundation

The Nelson Mandela Foundation with the support of ABSA and the Hanns Seidel Foundation will be convening a panel discussion on Governance and the Social Contract within a Changing International Context: Making Universal Healthcare, Universal. This is the first in a series of discussions in response to the 18th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, Tackling the Inequality Pandemic, delivered by the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres.

International experts will be a part of this important conversation, including, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the current Director-General at the World Health Organization (WHO) and former Minister of Health and Minister of Foreign Affairs in Ethiopia, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, the regional Director of the WHO in Africa with over 40 years of national and international experience and Professor Helen Rees the Executive Director of the Reproductive Health & HIV Institute at Wits University and a leading researcher in South Africa. The conversation will be facilitated by Umunyana Rugege a public health activist and current Executive Director of Section 27.

The speakers are expected to further advance the conversation by addressing how the current global health crisis has disrupted global governance structures and laid the deep inequalities of our time bare. The discussion will further seek to offer inputs into how to rethink the systems that bind our society together and redefine the ‘social contract’ between people and institutions, both nationally and internationally.

The key lines of enquiry will include

  • How do we make universal healthcare both universal and equitable across the globe
  • How do ‘social contracts’ enforce unequal power relations and patterns of exclusion with a focus on Africa
  • Is it possible to develop inclusive processes and policy formation that account for social inequalities mostly affecting developing regions

What is the role of international and state institutions in determining the emerging priorities of a post-Covid-19 world?
