Invitation to Cover: #Each1Feed1 Food Distribution in KwaZulu-Natal
From: Nelson Mandela Foundation
Date of Publication: 18 August 2021

From Thursday the 19th to Friday the 20th of August, the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Mandela Day team will be in Pietermaritzburg and Durban with the local Chamber of Business to deliver Each1Feed1 emergency relief. We will also be taken on a tour of areas affected by the outbreak of public violence in July to understand better the needs of communities.  Each1Feed1 food distributions will take place at the Tusong Centre in Umgababa and Sizakala Centre in Craigieburn.

The Each1Feed1 campaign is an initiative designed to support families facing severe food insecurity Each campaign food pack is nutritionally diverse and designed to support a family of five for about a month.

On a recent visit to KwaZulu-Natal, Foundation Chief Executive Sello Hatang said the following: “I have personally visited many of the sites of public violence in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, and have been moved by the extraordinary creative energy to be found in the midst of desolation. And I have been inspired, again and again, by the demonstration of solidarity as the private sector works with the state and with civil society in confronting what is an enormous challenge.”

If a post-Covid world is going to be liveable for all, then it will have to draw deeply not only on respect for the rule of law and capacity to enforce it, but also on deep-rooted cultures of collective responsibility, solidarity and care. How to build those cultures is a singular challenge in the contexts of the damage Covid has done to economies, social fabrics and human psyches.
