Invitation to cover: “Attached to The Soil”, An Exhibition by Peter Glendinning in Association with the Nelson Mandela Foundation
From: Nelson Mandela Foundation
Publishing date: 9 March 2023

The Nelson Mandela Foundation invites you to the opening of this exhibition of 50 photographic portraits conceived in partnership with Peter Glendinning and a number of South Africans of all ages and social backgrounds.

The exhibition highlights stories based on soil-related metaphors created by young people and captures their hopes, fears, aspirations and disappointments. It speaks of a people who are distinguished by their diversity and a variety of racial, cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds. All have been marked by the tragic history of racialised exploitation in this land.

“But these photographs present the national psyche in a completely different way. They suggest that South Africa comprises a people who want to belong, who desire unity, and want to live in peace with their neighbours whatever their identity, cultural expressions or historical trajectory.” - Adam Habib

“Attached to the Soil” is a necessary corrective to the public narrative of what South Africa is and what it could be according to the people of this country. It reflects the voices of ordinary people and not the political and economic elites that claim to represent them and is perhaps more relevant today than ever before.
