An exciting project by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and digital partner Flow Communications has resulted in a social media award.

At the 2014 New Generation Social and Digital Media Awards, held on 21 October at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, Flow designer Ryan Levenson won a gold award and was named top graphic designer for his work on the re-launched Mandela Day website.

The New Generation Social and Digital Media Awards recognise innovative and strategic social and digital media campaigns.

The new-look site, developed by Flow in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, was launched ahead of this year’s Nelson Mandela International Day. It pays homage to Madiba, celebrates his legacy and encourages the world to live by his values – today and every day.

With bold, fluid visuals, engaging, informative content, and a responsive design, the Mandela Day site benchmarks against some of South Africa’s most innovative and technically advanced sites.

Says Danielle Melville, Director of Communications and Outreach at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, “The new mandeladay.com platform is part of a larger strategic digital initiative at the Foundation, and will be fully integrated into the new nelsonmandela.org site that will be launched in November 2014.

“Through responsive design, the aim was to access a wide global audience (with a focus on youth) on conventional web and mobile platforms to ensure Mandela Day and Madiba’s public service mandate reached mainstream audiences. We truly commend Flow as one of our key partners for taking our vision and making it both relevant and tangible.”

MD of Flow Tiffany Turkington-Palmer felt the award was worthy recognition for the effort that went into building the new-look Mandela Day site: “We’re hugely proud of the award, and the fantastic team behind the website build. The Nelson Mandela Foundation is one of Flow’s favourite clients, a passion that carries through seamlessly into the work we do for them.”
