On 18 July 2014, Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa will run a food security and volunteer engagement event at the Sandton Convention Centre, and the Canal Walk Shopping Centre in Cape Town.

Titled Meals in Memory, the event will see a record number of 6 000-plus volunteers package 822 000 meals in a single day, or meals for a year for over 6 000 pre-school learners.

Teams of 20 volunteers, in shifts of 67 minutes, will package enough nutritious food to feed 20 children three meals a week for an entire year.

PLEASE NOTE: there are still 30 spots available for groups of 20 to 25 volunteers at the event at the Sandton Convention Centre. Please email to book your spot.

During the event at the Sandton Convention Centre, guests of honour will celebrate the life of Madiba with a special candle-lighting ceremony.

Guests of honour taking part include:

  • 07h45: Senior representative from SABMiller
  • 09h45: FirstRand CEO Mr Sizwe Nxasana
  • 11h45: NDA chairman Mr MF Kekana
  • 13h45: Mr Luvuyo Mandela (lead adviser at Tyathumzi Advisory, and great-grandson of Nelson Mandela)
  • 15h45: Mr Pierre Spies (professional rugby player)

Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa creates awareness of the reality that one in five children in South Africa are stunted. Feeding children during childhood can contribute 3% to our economic growth. Children malnourished during early childhood suffer irreversible brain development impairment.

Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa’s Results Oriented Nutrition Programme is a volunteer-based hunger eradication programme that provides empowerment opportunities for unregistered crèches (or what the South African government calls early childhood development centres) to self-fund teacher training, and to develop a dignifying environment for children that attend these pre-schools.
