An example of one of the Twitter messages sent via a fake account

A scam currently doing the rounds on Twitter sees numerous fake accounts tweeting requests for airtime donations for Nelson Mandela.

Tweets from various spam accounts ask fellow Twitter account holders to donate MTN airtime.

The following examples are part of the scam:

  • From @Thembi_Gee: “I just sent R115 MTN Airtime to Tata Mandela… You can also do the same 0782240489… Happy Birthday Tata Madiba!!”
  • From @sibalbig: “I just sent Madiba a MTN airtime voucher worth R30. U can also do the same, his digits are 0839643234.”

The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory would like to remind members of the public that the organisation does not send unsolicited SMSs, emails or Twitter messages on behalf of Mr Mandela.

Any such messages received should be viewed as fraudulent and reported to the Centre of Memory.
