August 1, 2008 –  Cards came from kings and queens, presidents and prime ministers, but mostly they came from ordinary people: from toddlers to fellow 90-year-olds who just wanted to express their love and admiration for their hero.

“I like the cards from children that are drawn or hand-written with messages from the bottom of their hearts,” said Buyi Sishuba, correspondence officer for the Foundation.

Cards were received from countries including India, Germany, Kenya, England, Malaysia, Luxembourg, the USA, and the Netherlands. One was even written in Welsh.

“A lot of cards came from people who are 90 or turning 90. I think that’s really special,” said Dialogue Co-ordinator Naomi Warren.

One card from England was addressed:

Mr Nelson Mandela
South African Embassy
Or wherever he can be found

The Nelson Mandela Foundation is planning an exhibition of all the cards for Mr Mandela to see.
