Mr Nelson Mandela met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel at his office in Johannesburg today. Ms Merkel is on a two-day state visit to South Africa as part of her first tour of sub-Saharan Africa.
The German government has supported the Nelson Mandela Foundation since the early years of its inception through a commitment by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) following a meeting between Mr Mandela and Chancellor Schröder in Germany.
GTZ assisted the Nelson Mandela Foundation with capacity building and it has established itself as a fully fledged Memory and Dialogue institution as a result of such partnerships.
