Launch of Dis-eases of Secrecy: Tracing History, Memory & Justice & Dialogue

You are invited to join us in marking the launch of Dis-eases of Secrecy: Tracing History, Memory & Justice, a seminal book on difficult South African pasts. We mark the book launch by engaging the authors – both well-established scholars with international reputations – in an intergenerational dialogue designed to insist that the difficult questions be asked. These questions will include among others:

Will this book not reinforce narratives of rage and alienation?
Why is science in post-apartheid South Africa not supported by robust education in ethics?
What chemical and biological warfare capacity does the post-apartheid security establishment have?
Is memory work about holding up a mirror?  Who should be holding the mirror?
Can we re-define ‘reconciliation’ as an accounting process which demands that ‘the books’ and ‘the numbers’ add up?
How do make the reading of books a more accessible (if not entertaining) practice and, at the same time, a commitment to investigation?
Science demands curiosity and competition.  What holds you back from embracing science…. Is it uvalo?”
