Oct 19, 2007 — Former President Nelson Mandela is regrettably unable to accept the invitation from the Springboks to attend the Rugby World Cup Final in Paris tomorrow as he requires rest after recent travels.

Mr Mandela’s hopes and thoughts will be with the national team as he watches the match on television. You can also watch his video message to the Amabokoboko by clicking here.

He said:  “We are powerfully reminded of that historic day in 1995.  We not only won the Rugby World Cup, but more importantly we were one nation united behind our victorious team.

“We know that our boys have the ability, strength and determination to be victorious once more, because we are a winning nation.  I do not doubt for a moment that the Springboks can win back the trophy.”

Mr Mandela said it was fortunate that President Thabo Mbeki would be in Paris to represent all at home.  “He carries with him the good wishes and support of all South Africans, including ourselves,” Mr Mandela said.

Mr Mandela said his own message to the Springboks was to play the game “hard and honestly … and hold your heads high whatever the outcome.
Bring it home Boks, Mayigoduswe indebe yamabhokobhoko,  Bring die beker huis toe waar hy hoort, Bokke, Mayibuye ekhaya Bokke!”

Mr Mandela has also recorded a video message that will be broadcast on the SABC before the kick-off on Saturday night.  The message has also been sent to Springbok coach Jake White and it is hoped the team will have an opportunity to view it before the game.

On Friday October 19 photos of Mr Mandela supporting the Springboks will be posted on the Nelson Mandela Foundation website at around 3pm.  Please visit the website to download these images:  www.nelsonmandela.org.

On Saturday October 20 shortly after 9pm Mr Mandela’s video message will also be available on the Foundation’s website and in the event of the Springboks winning the trophy additional photographs will be posted by 11pm.
