DON’T SUPPORT APARTHEID/ CAMPAIGNS AGAINST THE TRICAMERAL PARLIAMENT
The scourge of the Tricameral Parliament elicited anger and protest within the UDF and the democratic movement as a whole. 3. Civics & community organisation
DON’T VOTE FOR COMMUNITY COUNCILS and COUNCILLORS NO HOUSES
The UDF’s protest against Black Local Authorities and its resistance to rent increases in the form of the rent boycott are memorable features of the year 1983. SAHA’s materials extend beyond the rent boycotts of 1983, and beyond the issues related to the Black Local Authorities in 1983. They reveal the recurrent nature of these themes throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s.

The Vaal unrest of 1984, organised around the UDF stayaway and the ECC’s Troops out of the Townships campaign, is also commemorated at SAHA. 4.3. The State of Emergency
21st JULY 1985 STATE OF EMERGENCY
The declaration of the state of emergency in 1985 generated a wave of detentions and repressions. But another by-product of this imposition was a flood of discussion from various quarters about the impacts and repercussions of the State of Emergency on the democratic movement at large, and on the UDF in particular. Many of these documents, as well as contemporary photographs, are to be found at SAHA.

The State of Emergency, 1988-1989
The fourth state of emergency, as an extension of 3 years of emergency conditions generated a large body of discussion. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OUR COUNTRY/ STATE OF EMERGENCY 1985/UITENHAGE MASSACRE/PEBCO 3
The state crackdown that framed the 1985 State of Emergency left pools of blood across the country. The state brutality of the Uitenhage (Langa) Massacre, and the murder of the Pebco Three are recorded at SAHA in photographs, on audio tapes/CDs and in TRC amnesty applications.

HANDS OFF COSATU- ATTACK ON COSATU HOUSE, 7 MAY 1987 (& KHOTSO HOUSE IN 1988)
The attack on COSATU House and the one on Khotso House a year later were given extensive coverage at the TRC. The mass of SAHA’s material on these fronts concerns amnesty applications by apartheid’s right-hand men for these counter-revolutionary acts. This material is augmented by a range of items about the Hands off COSATU campaign.
5. Women
FEDSAW LAUNCH DECEMBER 1984/ FEDTRAW WOMEN’S CONGRESS APRIL 1987
The launch of FEDSAW in 1987 and the FEDTRAW Women’s Congress in 1987, are two landmarks of the women’s movement in the 1980s. SAHA’s material related to these organisations provides broad insight into the activities of FEDSAW and FEDTRAW. It is a story told through pamphlets, photos and documents.

COSATU LAUNCH
The presence of COSATU material in SAHA’s collections is as ubiquitous as COSATU’s presence on South African terrain since its inception in 1985. While such references are too vast to list, SAHA’s records from the day of COSATU’s launch provide an immediate visual entry point into that pivotal event.

MAY DAY- UDF/COSATU
SAHA’s collection of material related to May Day is most striking in that it is mainly of a highly visual nature. Badges, stickers, photos and leaflets populate our collections in tribute to May Day celebrations by the UDF and COSATU. The strong ties between the UDF and COSATU, which became more notable as the UDF came under increasing state repression, is implicit to this story and these items.

ZAPIRO UDF CALENDER 1987/ MDM
As one of the most accessible commentators on South African politics, Zapiro’s presence is felt at SAHA in a dedicated collection of his cartoons. The Mass Democratic Movement, too, has an extensive presence in SAHA’s collections. The extent of these MDM materials is indicative of the MDM’s amorphous nature, which was linked intimately to the banning of the UDF.

UNBAN THE ANC/ THE UDF’S OFFICIAL ADOPTION OF THE FREEDOM CHARTER
While the UDF only officially adopted the Freedom Charter in 1988, it was a prominent feature of the long struggle history that gave rise to the Charterist Movement. SAHA’s Freedom Charter material is extensive. THE RELEASE OF NELSON MANDELA
Given Mandela’s prominent and iconic place in South Africa’s struggle history, it is natural that archival items concerning the nation’s first democratically-elected president abound.
