Liberal Party

A non-racial, left of centre political party formed in 1953, it rejected the communist leanings of the Congress of Democrats*. Its aim was equality for all and it hoped to form a strong opposition to the NP.* Among its prominent leaders was outspoken author Alan Paton. The Liberal Party was disbanded in 1963 when the government legislated against non-racial membership of a political party.
