Afrikaner Broederbond (League of Afrikaner Brothers)

An exclusively Afrikaner secret society, established in 1919 to promote the interests of Afrikaner nationalism. It spearheaded the movement for an Afrikaner republic by working towards overwhelming control of all government structures, the economy, education and cultural affairs. In the 1960s, however, when information leaked out about its membership and covert activities, its power began to decline. By the 1990s its influence was negligible.
