Vital indicators of the country's geo- and socio-politics

Unless otherwise indicated the term "South Africa" refers to the area within the 1910 Union of South Africa boundaries including the nominally independent homelands of Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Ciskei and Venda (TBVC). Many official and semi-official statistics omit the TBVC territories. The term "coloured" in the South Africa context refers to people of mixed race origin.
