The Nelson Mandela Foundation Calls for Continued Support of the FIFA World Cup and Nation Building

“The greatest glory of living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall.”

June 27, 2010 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation would like to congratulate South Africans on being great competitors, good sports and warm hosts of the 2010 World Cup.

Our participation in the matches saw us shine as gallant, but fair fighters. We did not make it to the final 16, but we can all hold our heads high after our performances both on and off the field.

As Mr Mandela has said: “The greatest glory of living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you fall.”

We urge all South Africans to continue enjoying the matches and playing welcoming, friendly and fun hosts to the thousands of visitors enjoying our country. We have already scored magnificently in the hearts of our friends from other countries. Let us keep up the spirit of ubuntu and enthusiasm for which we are known and admired. Let us keep building on the excitement of the World Cup as we continue to build on the unity of spirit that has been built up over the past two weeks.

When Madiba was released from prison 20 years ago, we started a nation-building process that we knew would be long and arduous. Much still needs to be done. In the spirit of Nelson Mandela Day, let every South African become part of a movement for good.

Come on Mzansi, let’s give it our best shot!
