The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory has been made aware of a new scam, this time sent via SMS. The Centre of Memory urges the public not to be fooled by an unsolicited text offering compensation.
The fraudulent (and unsolicited) text reads as follows:
“FROM NUMBER: +27763569509
CONGRATULATIONS! Your cell C no: was chosen by the (SA) Compensation Fund, & The Nelson Mandela Charity Org. We are compensating South Africans for Celebrating 17 YRS of Freedom. You have won R250 000. Claim no: 01kp. To claim Contact Mr T. Malgas on (078)4415103.T&Cs Apply.”
A similar SMS has also been doing the rounds. It reads as follows:
“Congratulations! Your Cell NO Have Won R250,000.00 Compensation Funds From Nelson Mandela Foundation. Your Ref No: JM44PA Call 0218382648 For Your Cash Prize."
Members of the public who receive such a SMS, or similar, are urged not to act. Do not contact the sender, do not follow any instructions indicated in the text message. The Centre of Memory does not send unsolicited text messages.
