Nelson Mandela officially counted
Third Census for retired statesman

21 October, 2011 – Nelson Mandela was today officially counted on the eleventh day of South Africa’s Census 2011. He was officially enumerated at his home in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, by the Statistician-General Pali Lehohla. Mr Mandela, who is now fully retired, has joined millions of South Africans in being counted in the Census which began on 10 October 2011 and is scheduled to end on 31 October.

This was Mr Mandela’s third Census. The first one after his release from prison in 1990 was held in 1996, followed by another in 2001 and then Census 2011.
All persons in South Africa during the census period are legally bound to answer a series of questions in the Census to provide the government with reliable population statistics in order for it to carry out its work.
