The learners pose in front of their new library

On 26 June 2014 a Mandela Day Long Walk to Freedom library was opened at the Mahlubimangwe Primary School in Winterton, KwaZulu-Natal.

The school faces challenges common to small rural schools, including dilapidated classrooms and no access to municipal water (water is collected in rain tanks on the roof).

However, thanks to proceeds from the Old Mutual Joburg2C mountain biking race, learners aged five to 14 will soon benefit from their new library.

The library is stocked with books from Rotary International District 9400 in Bedfordview under the American book programme, 200 magazines donated by Joe’s Magz in Johannesburg, and children’s books in isiZulu for first-time readers, donated by The Bangle programme in partnership with Qualibooks Naledi.

The dreadful state of the existing classrooms

The launch of the library was celebrated with a day of singing and speeches. Speakers included Gary Green of Gary Green Farms, who is well known in the area for his ongoing community support, the local chief and representatives of the school.

TV star Hlubi Mboya added to the excitement by attending the opening of the library, and giving supporters and fans plenty of photo opportunities.

Mahlubimangwe Primary School library is the sixth such library to be sponsored by the Old Mutual Joburg2C mountain biking race.
