13th Cycalive Initiative Leaves Joburg for Durban

First official Mandela Day project gets going

March 21, 2010 – This morning, on Human Rights Day and the 50th anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre, 30 Johannesburg teenagers set out on their bicycles for Durban, as the 13th annual Cycalive initiative and the first official event of this year’s Mandela Day got under way.

Cycalive mixes young people from different backgrounds – the 30 Grade 11 cyclists come from the Torah Academy in Orchards, Johannesburg, and the Pace and Moletsane high schools in Soweto. Their ride is sponsored by many corporates, and the money raised given to the Pace and Moletsane schools.

Johannesburg school takes up the Mandela Day call

Bid to create safe school environment dedicated to Nelson Mandela’s values and principles

July 22, 2009 – The St Teresa’s Mercy School in Johannesburg has marked Mandela Day by committing to ensuring its environment is safe for its learners, parents, teachers and visitors. The school’s Learners Volunteer Safety Cadets are doing this in gratitude for Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of activism, and are challenging all other South African schools to establish learner volunteer safety teams too.
