The Protection of State Information Bill’s (POSIB) long passage through Parliament saw it emerge finally in April 2013. It then went to the President’s office for signing into law, where months later it remains in limbo. This is not surprising, given the Bill’s many flaws and its vulnerability to a constitutionality challenge.

Dr Mo Ibrahim, businessman, academic and philanthropist, delivered the 11th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture at the University of South Africa in Pretoria on 17 August 2013.
The theme for this year’s lecture was “Building social cohesion” – a call for all South Africans to work towards a united, cohesive, democratic and national society. Dr Ibrahim’s address focused on the need for social cohesion not only in South Africa, but also between the 54 nations that make up the African continent. And there was no mincing of words.
