Cookbook about food in Madiba’s life is voted the best in South Africa

Dec 18, 2008 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation is pleased to announce that one of the two books it released in 2008 to coincide with Mr Mandela’s 90th birthday has been honoured with an international award.

Hunger for Freedom: The Story of Food in the Life of Nelson Mandela by Anna Trapido and published by Jacana Media, in association with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, is the South African winner of the Gourmand World Cookbook Award.

Foundation hosts aids2031 meeting to make an HIV/AIDS plan for Southern Africa

Dec 2, 2008 – “It’s an enormous responsibility, but there’s an opportunity to strategically influence the course of the epidemic [HIV/AIDS] in the future.”

Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Achmat Dangor was speaking at an aids2031 strategy meeting today, aimed at finding ways to change the future for SADC countries with extremely high HIV prevalence rates.

Foundation website to undergo changes

New-look site will be easier to use

Feb 10, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation website will soon have a new look.

Originally launched on July 22, 2007, to coincide with the Annual Lecture delivered by Kofi Annan, the website is a resource for thousands of monthly visitors interested in news about Mr Mandela, as well as the work of the Foundation and its Centre of Dialogue and Memory.

The new site will make it easier for users to find information, splitting the news feeds into three areas: Organisation and Governance, Dialogue and Memory.

Foundation mourns the loss of Dr Motlana

Trustee loses his long battle with cancer

Dec 1, 2008 – One of the trustees of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Dr Nthato Motlana, a businessman and close friend and physician of the Mandela family, has died.

He passed away last night at his home in Johannesburg after a long battle with cancer.

Memory by the megabyte

Consultative forum highlights the need to digitise archival material

Nov 28, 2008 – The importance of the internet as a digital space to store, source and find archival material was one of the main points that was made at a consultative forum convened by the Nelson Mandela Foundation on Friday.

The forum provided a space for South African institutions having a direct stake in the Nelson Mandela Archive to understand the work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, ask questions about the Foundation and its work, and offer advice to the Foundation moving forward.

Mr Mandela witnesses handover of historical collections

State receives records of Rivonia Trial

Nov 28, 2008 – Mr Nelson Mandela witnessed the handover of two valuable collections related to his contribution to the anti-apartheid struggle today.

At the ceremony at his office in Houghton, Johannesburg, the Rivonia Trial records were returned to the state and 100 hours of recorded conversations were given to the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.

Nelson Mandela asks for his retirement to be made a reality

Nov 24, 2008 – Nelson Mandela receives an average of 4 000 messages a month from people throughout the world. Of course, many of these messages pay tribute to Mr Mandela and wish him well. Equally, many are requests, mostly for his signature, a message of support, an endorsement, a public appearance or an interview.

Mr Mandela is 90 years old and in 2004 he publically announced his intention to step away from public life. Since then he has steadily reduced his engagements, and he now appears at public events only in extraordinary circumstances.
