Morning sessions discuss the necessity of reflecting on the past in order to move forward

March 21, 2009 – Day two of the Promise of Leadership started with the Nelson Mandela Foundation's CEO Achmat Dangor asking people to reflect on the intense debates of yesterday and bear those in mind when debating today's topics.

Dangor said that it was of particular significance that the day's dialogue sessions, which focused on Africa's past and future, occurred on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and on the annual Human Rights Day in South Africa.

March 20, 2009 – Rwanda's President Paul Kagame opened the Nelson Mandela Foundation's Promise of Leadership dialogue today with a keynote address highlighting the need for leadership in Africa to tackle the challenges facing the continent.

Held at the Helderfontein Estate, on the outskirts of Johannesburg, the two-day dialogue aims to examine the role of leadership in addressing these challenges.

Poem and parable get discussion flowing among network members

Mar 19, 2009 – Members of the African Leadership Initiative (ALI) met near Johannesburg today in a closed session, a precursor to the Nelson Mandela Foundation's Promise of Leadership conference, to discuss the way forward for their organisation.

ALI, which forms part of the Aspen Global Leaders' Network, focuses on creating networks to effect change. This is done by using the influence of powerful individuals and leaders who form part of the ALI classes.

Foundation receives Madiba portrait by Marlene Dumas

Dutch ambassador hands over gift to Nelson Mandela

March 10, 2009 – One of South Africa’s most prominent artists, Marlene Dumas, today gifted Nelson Mandela with a portrait of him as a younger man.

The portrait, handed over at a small ceremony at the Nelson Mandela Foundation today by Dutch ambassador Rob de Vos on behalf of Dumas, who resides in the Netherlands, has the handwritten message “Would you trust this man with your daughter?” across the bottom.
