Nelson Mandela meets top debaters

Learners from around Africa compete in prestigious tournament

April 21, 2009 – Nelson Mandela today met with the finalists and winners from the fourth annual African Schools Debating Championships (ASDC), which held its finals at the Nelson Mandela Foundation on Monday.

The week-long competition saw top debaters from South Africa, Botswana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Angola and Kenya pitting their skills against each other.

Foundation hosts young debating leaders

African Schools Debating Championships finals held at Foundation

April 20, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted the finals of the African Schools Debating Championships today.

The international championships, which include teams made up selected of students from a number of African countries, are held annually to bring together the top regional schools debating teams. The competition, organised by the South African Schools Debating Board, has two finals, one a debate open to schools from South Africa and the other a debate contested between national teams.

Foundation contributes to truth commission in Kenya

April 8, 2009 – On Saturday April 4 the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Centre of Memory and Dialogue co-convened, with the Goethe Institute, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and the South African History Archive (SAHA), a workshop entitled “Truth, Reconciliation and Transparency in South Africa and Kenya – Lessons Learned”. The workshop was facilitated by former Foundation staffer Shadrack Katuu.

Debate gets a second wind

Dialogue explores justice, rights, race and power in post-apartheid South Africa

April 7, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Memory Programme, in association with the South African History Archive and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, held a two-day dialogue event last week which explored issues around reconciliation and memory in post-apartheid South Africa.

Over 100 people from civil society, government, academia, business and the memory sectors assembled to discuss the topic of memory and the themes of justice, rights, race and power.

March 27, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Memory Programme and the South African History Archive (SAHA) are convening a dialogue forum on the theme “Reconciliation and the Work of Memory in Post-apartheid South Africa”.
The purpose of the dialogue, organised in partnership with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, is to determine the effectiveness of memory in the post-apartheid era in South Africa.

Foundation and South Africa: The Good News partner to create lasting record of dialogue

March 26, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation and South Africa: The Good News are producing a coffee-table book about the recent Promise of Leadership Dialogue, held in Johannesburg on March 20 and March 21, 2009.

The book seeks not just to capture the essence of the dialogue, but also to further the discussions by incorporating original writing by those who attended and by other thought leaders on the various session topics.
