Professor Muhammad Yunus meets Nelson Mandela

Microfinancer shares his ideas for fighting poverty

July 10, 2009 – Nelson Mandela and Grameen Bank founder Professor Muhammad Yunus met today in Johannesburg as part of a week of dialogue activities ahead of the Seventh Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture.

In their meeting, Prof Yunus explained the Grameen Bank model to Mr Mandela, especially the concept of creating social businesses to alleviate poverty.

Annual Lecture speaker soaks up South African history

Day one of Prof Yunus’ visit spent viewing some of Johannesburg’s heritage sites

July 7, 2009 – Professor Muhammad Yunus began his trip to South Africa with a heritage tour today, visiting some of Johannesburg’s most significant social landmarks.

The Nobel Laureate, and founder and Managing Director of Grameen Bank, is in the country to deliver the Seventh Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture. He will speak about the eradication of poverty through investing in marginalised people.

Bulgaria honours Nelson Mandela

Ambassador confers highest award in recognition of Mr Mandela’s contribution to freedom

July 7, 2009 – The Bulgarian Ambassador, Volodya Neykov, conferred his country’s highest state award – the Order of the Starra Planini – on Nelson Mandela today, on behalf of Bulgaria’s President Georgi Parvanov.

Nelson Mandela honoured by FIFPro

Professional footballers recognise Madiba’s contribution to football and a just society at an award ceremony at the NMF

July 3, 2009 – The worldwide representative organisation for all professional football players, FIFPro, honoured Nelson Mandela today at small ceremony at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, in Johannesburg, in recognition of Mr Mandela’s contribution towards non-racism and peace and his commitment to football.

Receiving the award on his behalf was Foundation trustee Tokyo Sexwale.

Nelson Mandela visits Freedom Park‬‪

Mr Mandela moved by ambitious heritage project

July 2, 2009 – Nelson Mandela today visited Freedom Park in Pretoria. This was Madiba’s first visit to the park. ‬‪

In 1999 Nelson Mandela said “the day should not be far off when we shall have a people’s shrine, a freedom park, where we shall honour, with all the dignity they deserve, those who endured pain so we should experience the joy of freedom.”

He was describing Freedom Park, which he visited today.

Hunger for Freedom wins prestigious award

Cookbook about the role of food in Nelson Mandela’s life wins the food book “Oscar”

July 2, 2009 – Hunger for Freedom: The Story of Food in the Life of Nelson Mandela has won a Special Jury prize in the “Oscars” of food books from around the world.

The prize for the book, published by Jacana Media in association with the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 2008, was presented at the 14th Gourmand World Cook Book Awards ceremony in Paris, France yesterday evening.

Call to celebrate Mandela Day on July 18

“It is time for new hands to lift the burdens” – Nelson Mandela, 2008

June 29, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the 46664 campaign, in association with their sister organisations, have called for Mandela Day on 18 July to be recognised as an annual international “day of humanitarian action” in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy.

Mandela Day serves as a catalyst for each and every person around the world to realise that they have the ability to change it through small actions. We hope that this will lead to an international movement for good.

Foundation urges people to focus their work around communities

June 29, 2009 – The call by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and its sister organisations to celebrate Mr Mandela’s birthday on July 18, as Mandela Day is gaining momentum with communities planning activities in different parts of the country.

Mandela Day is a global call to action for all people to follow in Mr Mandela’s footsteps by doing good in their own communities. This is in recognition of his decades of sacrifice for humanity.

Bafana Bafana meet Nelson Mandela

Madiba wishes South African football team well ahead of their Confederations Cup semi-final

June 24, 2009 Nelson Mandela met the Bafana Bafana football squad today to wish them well ahead of their Confederations Cup semi-final against Brazil tomorrow.

The informal meeting at Mr Mandela’s office in Houghton was attended by the 23 players who make up the squad and their support staff.
