Nelson Mandela Foundation joins forces with UCT to launch new Archival Platform website

August 26, 2009 – A new website launched this month is the result of several years of planning between the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the University of Cape Town – the Archival Platform is a networking, advocacy and research initiative.

According to the Archival Platform website, its aim is to “facilitate dialogue and information sharing between professionals, academics and government employees in the heritage and archive sector”.

Nelson Mandela congratulates South Africa’s athletics medal winners

Nelson Mandela today met South Africa’s winning athletes who have returned from the World Athletics Championships

August 26, 2009 – Nelson Mandela today congratulated South Africa’s athletes who won medals at the recent World Athletics Championships in Berlin.

The men’s and women’s 800m gold medallists, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and Caster Semenya, and long jump silver medallist Khotso Mokoena met Mr Mandela in his office in Houghton.

Nelson Mandela congratulates Ahmed Kathrada on 80th birthday

Political veterans and lifelong friends get together for lunch to celebrate ‘still going strong’

August 20, 2009 – On the eve of his 80th birthday, anti-apartheid struggle veteran Ahmed Kathrada lunched with Nelson Mandela at his Houghton, Johannesburg home today.

Kathrada, who has known Mr Mandela for 64 years, was joined by activist turned businessman Cyril Ramaphosa, who is also the chairperson of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation.

Foundation bids farewell to Canadian intern

Intern says experience has helped her in her goal to develop records management and archives programmes within First Nations communities

August 18, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Centre of Memory and Dialogue has bade farewell to a Canadian intern who has spent her vacation working in its archive.

Victoria Hill’s three-month stint as a volunteer is part of an agreement with the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information.

Mandela family artwork is to feature in an exhibition in Germany

The Mandela family has painted a piece of artwork to be used in an exhibition marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall

August 17, 2009 – Some of Nelson Mandela’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren showed him their artwork, which will form part of an exhibition to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

US President names Professor Muhammad Yunus and Archbishop Desmond Tutu as medal of honour recipients

August 12, 2009 - US President Barack Obama recently named Professor Muhammad Yunus and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu as two of the 16 recipients of the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom. 

The US’s highest civilian honour, the Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who make an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the US, world peace and cultural or other significant public or private endeavours.

Hillary Clinton visits Nelson Mandela

US Secretary of State calls on Mr Mandela during her tour of Africa

Aug 7, 2009 – US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton paid a courtesy call on Nelson Mandela at his office in Houghton this afternoon before viewing his archival collections.

Clinton and Mr Mandela spent 30 minutes in private conversation before she toured the Nelson Mandela Foundation Centre of Memory and Dialogue, which she said later she had been “delighted” to do.

Rivonia trialists get together again

Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid veterans watch a play about the trial

July 29, 2009 – Nelson Mandela was today reunited with the three other surviving accused in the Rivonia Trial, in which they were sentenced to life imprisonment 45 years ago.

Andrew Mlangeni, 84, Denis Goldberg, 76, and Ahmed Kathrada, 79, met Mr Mandela at his office in Houghton this afternoon.
