He is widely recognised as the greatest secretary-general the UN has had. Most of his last year in office was taken up with the recently independent Congo. That he was also involved with SA has tended to be neglected.

Foundation extends condolences to family of Nat Bregman

Bregman was Mr Mandela’s ‘first white friend’

21 July, 2011 — On behalf of our Founder, Chairperson, Board of Trustees and staff, we extend our deep condolences to the family and friends of Nat Bregman who passed away in hospital, last night at the age of 88.

Mr Bregman shared an office with Mr Mandela for three years in the early 1940s at Johannesburg attorneys Sidelksy, Witkin and Eidelman, where they did their articles together.

Literacy gets a leg-up in Diepkloof

Celebration of reading and writing at Vulamazibuko Senior Primary School

22 June, 2011 – The spirit of Mandela International Day was alive at Vulamazibuko Senior Primary School in Diepkloof today. CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Achmat Dangor joined esteemed South African authors and poets, publishers and teachers to celebrate the donation of hundreds of books to the school. African Perspectives Publishing launched the initiative in partnership with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).
