Yeoville community conversation continues the dialogue on social cohesion

May 6, 2009– “If a person belongs to a different tribe or party, or if they express a different opinion, it doesn’t mean that they are your enemy. We need to understand one another,” said one of the participants at a community conversations workshop in Yeoville, Johannesburg today.
This conversation was the second held in Yeoville, a multicultural suburb where many immigrants live. It forms part of a series of conversations about social cohesion that will be convened around South Africa by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The facilitators and community members took up issues that were raised at the previous conversation and explored them further.

Prof Yunus is a Nobel Peace Prize winner who founded Grameen Bank. He is an activist for human and women’s rights, a founding member of the Global Elders, an economist, a prolific writer and a champion of the poor.

April 28, 2009 – 46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation are calling on people around the world to support the creation of an official Mandela Day, to be held annually on July 18, Nelson Mandela’s birthday.
This celebration of Mr Mandela’s life will serve as a global call to action for people to recognise their individual power to help to change the world around them for the better.

Learners from around Africa compete in prestigious tournament

April 21, 2009 – Nelson Mandela today met with the finalists and winners from the fourth annual African Schools Debating Championships (ASDC), which held its finals at the Nelson Mandela Foundation on Monday.
The week-long competition saw top debaters from South Africa, Botswana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Angola and Kenya pitting their skills against each other.

African Schools Debating Championships finals held at Foundation

April 20, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted the finals of the African Schools Debating Championships today.
The international championships, which include teams made up selected of students from a number of African countries, are held annually to bring together the top regional schools debating teams. The competition, organised by the South African Schools Debating Board, has two finals, one a debate open to schools from South Africa and the other a debate contested between national teams.

April 9, 2008 – A need for sensitivity around the use of language when reporting on foreigners in South Africa was highlighted after a short but intense dialogue held at the Nelson Mandela Foundation today.
The Foundation convened a one-hour discussion, in collaboration with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), to discuss the use of language when reporting on foreigners in South Africa.

April 7, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Memory Programme, in association with the South African History Archive and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, held a two-day dialogue event last week which explored issues around reconciliation and memory in post-apartheid South Africa.
Over 100 people from civil society, government, academia, business and the memory sectors assembled to discuss the topic of memory and the themes of justice, rights, race and power.
