South African and American students meet Mandela and work on a Mandela Day Student Charter

June 2, 2009 - A group of American and South African students, aged from 11 to 19, today met Nelson Mandela as part of a series of activities ahead of Mandela Day on July 18.

The group from New York are all winners of a competition that required high school students to submit creative projects on Mr Mandela’s life and legacy.

Foundation takes part in Take a Girl Child to Work Day

May 28, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation has participated in the national Take a Girl Child to Work Day by hosting one of Mr Mandela’s eight great-grandchildren at its offices.

Zenani Mandela, the granddaughter of Mr Mandela’s youngest daughter, Zindzi, spent the day learning about the work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg.

Nelson Mandela visits his former lodging in Alexandra

Mr Mandela meets with former landlord’s granddaughter

May 27, 2009 – Nelson Mandela today returned to a house where he rented a room as a young man when he first came to Johannesburg in 1941.

The house in Alexandra outside Johannesburg was owned by John Madzeka Xhoma, from Cradock in the Eastern Cape, who ran a transport business and owned two other properties.

Professor Muhammad Yunus to deliver Seventh Annual Lecture

Nobel Laureate to discuss combating poverty by investing in marginalised people

May 27, 2009 – This year’s Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, scheduled for July 11, will be delivered by Professor Muhammad Yunus.

The founder and managing director of Grameen Bank and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner will be focusing on “investment in the marginalised as a way of creating wealth and combating poverty”.

Cato Manor talks social cohesion

A community that has experienced xenophobic violence gets together to discuss underlying causes and solutions.

May 26, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Centre of Memory and Dialogue, through its social cohesion programme, works on delving deeper into the underlying causes of fears and perceptions of “the other”. It seeks to convene communities and catalyse leadership to create sustainable solutions in Africa and indeed, in the world.

As part of this continuing engagement with communities, the Foundation convened a community conversation in Cato Manor, KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday May 23, 2009. The event also acknowledged Africa Month and Africa Day (May 25), which commemorates the establishment of the Organization of African Unity.

Foundation donates books to Johannesburg Hospital School

Children thrilled by donation of Madiba comics

May 25, 2009 – The Johannesburg Hospital School received a welcome donation of books from the Nelson Mandela Foundation on May 22, 2009.

The school, which is situated in the children’s ward at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (previously Johannesburg General), caters to children who need constant medical care and therefore cannot attend a regular school.

Community conversations teams refine their techniques

In-depth training session aims at improving Foundation’s community conversation teams’ CCE skills

May 22, 2009 – Community conversation teams gathered from around the country, on the outskirts of Johannesburg, to continue their training in the Community Capacity Enhancement (CCE) methodology (link to downloadable PDF).

The six-day workshop, from Tuesday, May 19, to Sunday, May 24, looked to gather feedback from the teams on the facilitation of the community conversations to date, and to review the theory and application of the CCE methods and tools used in the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s community conversations programmes.

Foundation supports International Candlelight Memorial Day

Global Health Council encourages people to join virtual memorial

May 15, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation supports International Candlelight Memorial Day on Sunday May 17 and encourages people to sign up to a virtual memorial which serves as a reminder that AIDS touches everyone.

Speaking at the first 46664 concert in 2003, Nelson Mandela said: “We are all human, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic affects us all in the end. If we discard people who are dying from AIDS, then we can no longer call ourselves people.”
