Cookbook about the role of food in Nelson Mandela’s life wins the food book “Oscar”

July 2, 2009 – Hunger for Freedom: The Story of Food in the Life of Nelson Mandela has won a Special Jury prize in the “Oscars” of food books from around the world.
The prize for the book, published by Jacana Media in association with the Nelson Mandela Foundation in 2008, was presented at the 14th Gourmand World Cook Book Awards ceremony in Paris, France yesterday evening.

June 29, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation and the 46664 campaign, in association with their sister organisations, have called for Mandela Day on 18 July to be recognised as an annual international “day of humanitarian action” in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy.
Mandela Day serves as a catalyst for each and every person around the world to realise that they have the ability to change it through small actions. We hope that this will lead to an international movement for good.

Mandela Day is a global call to action for all people to follow in Mr Mandela’s footsteps by doing good in their own communities. This is in recognition of his decades of sacrifice for humanity.

June 26, 2009 – The need for healing to overcome the divisions of the past emerged as the central concern at a community conversation in Atteridgeville, near Pretoria, on June 20.
Organised by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in partnership with the Sonke Gender Justice Network, the Jesuit Refugee Services, the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation, the National Children’s and Violence Trust, and the Somali Association of South Africa, the community conversation in Atteridgeville was the first of a series of community dialogues in Gauteng province to promote social cohesion in communities affected by violence and xenophobia.

Madiba wishes South African football team well ahead of their Confederations Cup semi-final

June 24, 2009 Nelson Mandela met the Bafana Bafana football squad today to wish them well ahead of their Confederations Cup semi-final against Brazil tomorrow.
The informal meeting at Mr Mandela’s office in Houghton was attended by the 23 players who make up the squad and their support staff.

This year’s Annual Lecture will be delivered by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.

HSRC releases the results of the 2008 South African National HIV Prevalence, Incidence, Behaviour and Communication Survey

June 9, 2009 – South Africa’s HIV statistics were updated when the results of the third National HIV Prevalence, Incidence, Behaviour and Communication Survey were released at an event in Cape Town today.
Conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), the survey attempts to determine the levels of HIV prevalence in South Africa as well as the sexual behaviour of the respondents.

Clarence Seedorf becomes a Legacy Champion
Football legend contributes to sustaining the work of Nelson Mandela

June 5, 2009 – International football star Clarence Seedorf announced at a press conference after a meeting with Nelson Mandela today that he had become the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s latest Legacy Champion.
He joins Patrice Motsepe, Tokyo Sexwale, David Rockefeller, Peggy Dulany and Bill Clinton, who are also members of a select group of philanthropists who are helping to ensure that Mr Mandela’s legacy lives on.

Ahmed Kathrada’s book short-listed for award
Foundation trustee’s book collects thoughts and memories from his years in prison

June 4, 2009 – The latest book by Nelson Mandela Foundation trustee Ahmed “Kathy” Kathrada, who is a long-time friend and comrade of Nelson Mandela, has been short-listed for the prestigious Alan Paton Award.
A Simple Freedom: The Strong Mind of Robben Island Prisoner No. 468/64, published in 2008, contains a fusion of the quotations and passages collected by Kathrada during his 26 years in prison with visual images and “epiphanies of his own memories”.
