New York gears up for inaugural Mandela Day concert

Events In New York highlight the message and meaning behind Mandela Day

July 17, 2009 – The build up to the inaugural Mandela Day concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York has been marked by a number of events highlighting the message behind the initiative.

The campaign, which is supported by all of Nelson Mandela’s charities, encourages people to continue Nelson Mandela’s legacy by “making an imprint” and getting involved in their own communities – ultimately creating a better world for all. Mandela Day will be marked by a star-studded concert which will happen tomorrow, on Mr Mandela’s 91st birthday.

Professor Muhammad Yunus speaks about making the “impossible” possible during the Seventh Annual Lecture

July 11, 2009 – Nobel Peace Laureate and founder and managing director of Grameen Bank, Professor Muhammad Yunus, delivered the Seventh Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture at Johannesburg’s city hall today.

The theme of the lecture was “Eradicating poverty by investing in the marginalised”.

The lecture was opened by the Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Achmat Dangor and praise singer Zolani Mkiva who welcomed Mr Mandela to the lecture.

Prof Yunus inspires learners at Seventh Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture

Learners from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls reflect on poverty and the potential of individuals to influence society

July 11, 2009 – Three grade nine learners from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) were chosen to hear Professor Muhammad Yunus deliver the Seventh Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture today at City Hall in Johannesburg.

The girls were selected through an essay competition in which OWLAG grade nine learners were asked to select one of five quotes by Prof Yunus and to write a reflective essay based on that quote. Three winners were chosen based on the clarity, strength and thoughtfulness of their essays, and given the opportunity to hear Prof Yunus speak at an event attended by many distinguished leaders from South Africa, Africa and across the world.
