Rivonia trialists get together again
Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid veterans watch a play about the trial

July 29, 2009 – Nelson Mandela was today reunited with the three other surviving accused in the Rivonia Trial, in which they were sentenced to life imprisonment 45 years ago.
Andrew Mlangeni, 84, Denis Goldberg, 76, and Ahmed Kathrada, 79, met Mr Mandela at his office in Houghton this afternoon.

July 27, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation has launched a coffee-table book detailing the events that occurred at the first Promise of Leadership Dialogue, held in March this year. The dialogue took place at Helderfontein Estate, on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa, on March 20-21.

Footballers sing to wish Madiba a happy 91st birthday and give him a special team shirt

July 23, 2009 – Manchester City footballers, in South Africa to play in the Vodacom Challenge, met Nelson Mandela today when they visited the Nelson Mandela Foundation to give him a special-edition jersey.
As Mr Mandela entered the auditorium to meet the team and support staff, he said: “I hear that you want to shake my hand.”

July 22, 2009 – The St Teresa’s Mercy School in Johannesburg has marked Mandela Day by committing to ensuring its environment is safe for its learners, parents, teachers and visitors. The school’s Learners Volunteer Safety Cadets are doing this in gratitude for Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of activism, and are challenging all other South African schools to establish learner volunteer safety teams too.

Paper Wars documents the challenges that South Africans face when using the country’s access to information legislation

July 21, 2009 –Mandela Day was not only a day for South Africans to get involved in community-based activities; it was also an appropriate day for the launch of Paper Wars: Access to Information in South Africa, a book that explores the contested terrain of access to information in post-apartheid South Africa.
The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and Dialogue had provided research support to the book.

July 19, 2009 – The community of Atteridgeville near Pretoria celebrated Mandela Day yesterday with a reconciliation event, during which South Africans and foreign nationals publicly forgave one another for the xenophobic violence that occurred last year.

July 18, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation teamed up with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) today to donate books to disadvantaged children in greater Pretoria.
Mandela Day calls on people from around the world to dedicate 67 minutes of their lives to making a difference, in recognition of the 67 years Nelson Mandela dedicated to humanitarian work. In doing so, people will honour and celebrate his legacy.

Nelson Mandela celebrated his 91st birthday with South African President Jacob Zuma and the ANC executive committee

July 18, 2009 – Nelson Mandela began his 91st birthday celebrations today at his home in Johannesburg with a visit from President Jacob Zuma and the whole executive of the African National Congress (ANC).
The former president joined the group of more than 90 well-wishers – which included former Zambian President, Kenneth Kaunda – in a special marquee erected in the garden of Mr Mandela’s Houghton home.
