Actors, presenters and musicians bike South Africa in honour of Mandela legacy

July 13, 2010 – The South African Guild of Actors (SAGA) is proud to support “Bikers for Mandela Day”! July 18 is a special day for all South Africans and we wish the riders well on their journey in honour of Nelson Mandela. The message in performing 67 minutes of service and sacrifice is profound; that South Africa can lead this global initiative is significant. Once again we can demonstrate to the world that our nation is united by a spirit of fellowship and compassion for our fellow man.

Nelson Mandela Institute launches their Mandela Day education initiative

July 12, 2010 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s sister organisation, the Nelson Mandela Institute, launched its Mandela Day education initiative, entitled “Six ideas to step in”, at the Foundation’s offices on July 8, 2010.
The Institute, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Department of Basic Education, the Development Bank of Southern Africa, Equal Education, READ Educational Trust, the Sunday Times and the June 16 1976 Youth Foundation, are encouraging people to get involved in education as part of their Mandela Day activities.

July 11, 2010 – Nelson Mandela has paid a surprise visit to Soccer City to greet the 85 000 fans gathered to watch the Spain-Netherlands Fifa World Cup Final match.
Mr Mandela, accompanied by his wife Graça Machel, received a standing ovation and thunderous cheers from the packed stadium as he was driven around the field in a golf cart.

July 5, 2010 – A group of South African and international celebrities will join a group of bikers this year for a five-day tour in support of Mandela Day.
From July 15 to 18, 2010 en route from Johannesburg to Cape Town – in the smallest villages and the biggest cities – local and international actors, adventurers, media gurus, sportsmen and women, singers and supporters will be giving of their time to promote Mandela Day and get involved in community initiatives.

The meeting followed an earlier one with Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and other members of the family at her house in Soweto.

July 2, 2010 – Today eminent South Korean businessman Chung Mong-Joon showed his support for the Nelson Mandela Foundation and made a financial contribution to assist with its ongoing work.
Chung, a shareholder in Hyundai Heavy Industries and vice-president of FIFA, who is in South Africa for the duration of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, pledged to assist with the Foundation’s work.
