Nelson Mandela celebrates his 92nd birthday

Two of Madiba’s youngest great-granddaughters struggle to blow out candles on their own

July 18, 2010 – Surrounded by members of his family, Nelson Mandela today celebrated his 92nd birthday at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg.

Mr Mandela started off his day by receiving visits from old friends including former Zambian Prime Minister, Kenneth Kaunda. Various other invited guests brought him gifts and cards.

He was later serenaded by a large group of his grand-children and great-grandchildren, most of whom wore Nelson Mandela Day t-shirts to mark the first United Nations Nelson Mandela International Day. Many of Mr Mandela’s family had been out volunteering at community projects before they arrived at his private birthday party.

Pretoria children overwhelmed by the generous spirit of Mandela Day

Madiba’s spirit strong at Pretoria children’s home on Mandela Day

July 18, 2010 – “Where’s Mr Mandela?”

The question bounced off the walls at the Itumeleng Children’s Shelter in Sunnyside in Pretoria this morning, as people young and old came together to mark the second annual Mandela Day. While Nelson Mandela wasn’t at the shelter in person, his spirit seemed to be everywhere.

Today, officials from the Nelson Mandela Foundation once again joined forces with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), braving the early morning cold to hand over books, toys, blankets and birthday cake to orphans and vulnerable children at the shelter.

Children from Nelson Mandela’s villages wish him happy birthday

‘Happy birthday, dear grandpa, and many more years to come!’

July 17, 2010 – Ninety-two children from two of Nelson Mandela’s childhood villages in the Transkei travelled to Johannesburg to wish him happy birthday today.

The children, 67 from Mr Mandela’s birthplace of Mvezo, and 25 from the village of Qunu, where he moved to later in his childhood, met him at his Houghton home, where they got to meet him and to sing happy birthday to him.

July 14, 2010 – The Elders – a group of eminent global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela – have joined the former President of South Africa in a special message of support for Nelson Mandela International Day.

In a new video message shot during the Elders’ last visit to South Africa in June 2010, they urge people everywhere to give 67 minutes of their time to reach out to others in their communities.

Bikers for Nelson Mandela Day depart from Johannesburg

Bikers hit the road in support of Mandela Day

July 13, 2010 – A group of 21 motorbike riders and a support team of around 20 people left the Nelson Mandela Foundation this morning on a six-day road trip to Cape Town to spread the word about Mandela Day. Actor Morgan Freeman is participating in the event, although he is not riding a bike.

The bikers, including Jack Devnarain, Jeremy Mansfield, Lehlohonolo Saint Seseli and Hanna Grobler, will work in community projects in various towns en route as their contribution to Mandela Day.
