Third Mandela International Day launch

20 June, 2011 – Today saw the third official launch of Mandela International Day, which takes place annually on July 18, Mr Nelson Mandela’s birthday. The launch, which was held at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton, saw Foundation Trustee Tokyo Sexwale give a keynote address, and words from Foundation Chairman Professor Jakes Gerwel, amongst others.

Exhibition opening: In Pursuit of Liberty: Legality vs. Justice

15 June, 2011 Tuesday saw the opening of a new exhibition to mark 50 years since the formation of the Umkhonto weSizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress. -   In Pursuit of Liberty: Legality vs. Justice was was launched at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in association with Pambili Productions and South African History Online (SAHO).

Len Sak exhibition launches online

Digitised cartoons from 1990 - 1994 hosted on Foundation website

14 June, 2011 – Today sees the launch of an online collection of Len Sak’s cartoons on the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s website. The cartoon collection, aptly titled “South Africa’s transition to democracy”, is a collection of some 70 editorial cartoons created by Len Sak during the period 1990 – 1994, a tumultuous time in the country’s political history.

Nelson Mandela Foundation publishes final 2010 community conversations booklet

14 June, 2011 –  In 2007, the Nelson Mandela Foundation launched the community conversations programme, with the aim of facilitating discussions around the “burning issues” that concerned communities across the country. HIV/AIDS is without doubt one of the most serious challenges the country faces today, and this became the focus of the community conversations programme.

Focus group explores Protection of Information Bill

8 June, 2011 – Today the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Law co-convened a focus group on the Protection of Information Bill (POIB). It was designed as an exploratory conversation between representatives of key stakeholder structures of the state and of civil society.  The conversation was informed by a position paper prepared by Wits’ Iain Currie and Jon Klaaren.
