SAA brands fleet with Nelson Mandela Day logo

5 July, 2011 – The legacy of Nelson Mandela was given wings yesterday with the unveiling of the Mandela Day logo by South African Airways (SAA) on the first aircraft of its entire fleet. The new branded A330-200 Airbus, fourth out of six new aircraft, was revealed to sponsors and the media at the airways’ technical park in Johannesburg.

Foundation saddened by loss

30 June, 2011 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation is saddened to learn of the death of painter and activist Ronald Harrison. Harrison is most famous for his 1962 painting “The Black Christ”, which depicted Chief Albert Luthuli on the cross.

Literacy gets a leg-up in Diepkloof

Celebration of reading and writing at Vulamazibuko Senior Primary School

22 June, 2011 – The spirit of Mandela International Day was alive at Vulamazibuko Senior Primary School in Diepkloof today. CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation Achmat Dangor joined esteemed South African authors and poets, publishers and teachers to celebrate the donation of hundreds of books to the school. African Perspectives Publishing launched the initiative in partnership with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

An icon’s treasure trove

A PICTURE of Nelson Mandela’s only meeting with US President Barack Obama has pride of place behind the South African icon’s desk, alongside a photo of Muhammad Ali. This week, archivists at the Nelson Mandela Foundation admitted they had “no idea” the two men had ever met — until Obama sent the photograph last year, inscribed with the words “An inspiration to us all”.
