25 August, 2011 – This year’s CycAlive adventure is almost at an end, and the team has lots to reflect on as it approaches its final destination in Durban. Upon their arrival at around 15h30, the CycAlive team will march in a parade, accompanied by the Durban Field Band, to City Hall. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Day four of CycAlive 2011

The team continues on to the final leg of their exciting journey

24 August, 2011 – The CycAlive team is on the final leg of their journey from Johannesburg to Durban. Last night they stayed at a youth hostel in Elandslaagte, just outside Ladysmith. With a few hours to spare before nightfall, the team decided to unwind a little with a fun game of soccer. The team is en route to the Lions River Polo Club outside the town of Howick, roughly 90km from their final destination in Durban.

A stop at the Newcastle Provincial Hospital children’s ward

23 August, 2011 – After a night spent at the Majuba Youth Hostel in Volksrust, the team of 50 CycAlive participants and supervisors got an early start and headed down the glorious Majuba Mountain this morning. “As we wind down the mountain passes, the glorious scenery and breathtaking fresh wind is refreshing,” reports Rabbi Dovid Hazdan from the sponsor bus.

Spirits are up as the cyclists move towards Volksrust

22 August, 2011 – After a 5:15am start, the 40 CycAlive participants and the ten adults accompanying the cyclists on their journey were ready for yet another day of committed cycling. “We spent the cold night in a primary school hall, all sleeping on the floor together,” says Rabbi Dovid Hazdan, Dean of the Torah Academy, reporting from the bus.

CycAlive 2011 off to a great start

Cyclists journey 500 kilometres to spread Mandela Day legacy

21 August, 2011 – This morning some 150 learners, teachers and cycling enthusiasts convened at the Torah Academy campus in Norwood, Gauteng, for the 14th annual CycAlive challenge, a youth highlight in the Mandela Day activities calendar.

A three-school initiative designed to encourage ubuntu among South Africa’s youth, CycAlive follows the journey of a team of exuberant Grade 11 boys from diverse backgrounds as they cycle from Johannesburg to Durban, spreading goodwill and learning about themselves and others along the way.
