Royal visit to Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory
Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall view archive

3 November, 2011 – A portion of Nelson Mandela’s archive was viewed today by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall when they visited the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Johannesburg.
They were accompanied by Mr Mandela’s wife Mrs Graca Machel, South Africa’s High Commissioner to the Court of St James His Excellency Zola Skweyiya and Achmat Dangor, the Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.

SAA hands over Mandela Day libraries in Qunu and Mvezo

27 October, 2011 – The installation of Mandela Day libraries continues to spread the Mandela Day message about people’s capacity, when working together, to bring about positive change. The libraries promote a reading culture and address the call for equal access to resources for education.
The twelfth and thirteenth Mandela Day Libraries were opened at schools in the historically important areas of Mvezo and Qunu in the Eastern Cape district where Nelson Mandela was born. The two refurbished container units were sponsored by the South African Airways which, in the last two years, has involved primary schools in the area in their Mandela Day activities.

26 October, 2011 – Statement on behalf of Mr Imtiaz Cajee, nephew of Ahmed Timol and author of the book Timol: A Quest for Justice
In 2009 President Jacob Zuma posthumously awarded the Order of Luthuli to Ahmed Timol for his “excellent contribution and selfless sacrifice” in the anti-apartheid struggle. But the truth remains elusive around the death in police detention on 27 October 1971 of this 29-year-old school teacher.

25 October, 2011 – Seven months to the day after it started, the Twitter account @NelsonMandela has 50 000 followers.
“We are delighted at reaching this milestone,” said Sello Hatang, Communications Manager at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory. “What this means is that 50 000 people around the world and their thousands of followers get daily tweets of Mr Mandela’s words spoken in a variety of contexts over 60 years. They also receive daily historical dates in Mr Mandela’s life and reliable news updates.”

Third Census for retired statesman

21 October, 2011 – Nelson Mandela was today officially counted on the eleventh day of South Africa’s Census 2011. He was officially enumerated at his home in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, by the Statistician-General Pali Lehohla. Mr Mandela, who is now fully retired, has joined millions of South Africans in being counted in the Census which began on 10 October 2011 and is scheduled to end on 31 October.

“Very special” experience

14 October, 2011 – “Very special”, was how Sarah Dunn, the new head of UKAID, described her tour of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory archive today.
Ms Dunn and her colleague Hilary Nkulu were shown items from Mr Mandela’s personal archive by Sello Hatang, head of communications of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory (NMCM). They saw the oldest items in the archive, Mr Mandela’s Methodist Church membership cards from 1929 to 1934, a photograph of him when he was a teenager at high school, and letters he meticulously transcribed in prison.
