President Jacob Zuma has this evening, 13 June 2013, accompanied by ANC Treasurer-General Dr Zweli Mkhize, visited former President Nelson Mandela in hospital in Pretoria.

Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela accompanied by other members of the Mandela family visited Nkosi Dalibhunga Nelson Mandela in hospital this morning. Though it is a difficult period for the Mandela family, Nkosi Zwelivelile and the rest of the family have been heartened by the overwhelming messages of support from the public.

President Jacob Zuma last night, 10 June 2013, met with the medical team that is treating former President Nelson Mandela, and they gave him a thorough briefing. The former President is still in a serious, but stable condition in a Pretoria hospital.

Former President Nelson Mandela remains in hospital, and his condition is unchanged.
Madiba was admitted on Saturday, 8 June 2013, for treatment in a Pretoria hospital for a lung infection.

During the past few days former President Nelson Mandela has had a recurrence of lung infection. This morning at about 1.30am his condition deteriorated and he was transferred to a Pretoria hospital. He remains in a serious but stable condition.

Prof. Ndebele had been serving as Acting Chairman since the passing of Prof. Jakes Gerwel in November last year.

On 27 May 1963, Nelson Mandela arrived at Robben Island as a prisoner for the first time.
Fifty years later, looking back on that tumultuous period in his life, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Houghton, Johannesburg, celebrated the culmination of a five-year transition that saw Mr. Mandela’s post-presidential office transformed into a public and dialogue facility.

Fifty years ago today, Nelson Mandela arrived on Robben Island as a prisoner for the first time

It was 27 May 1963, and just over six months since he had been sentenced to five years in prison for leaving the country without a passport and inciting workers to strike.
Contrary to what some believe, prisoners are not sentenced to a particular prison; they are sentenced by the courts and the prison authorities decide where to send them.
In Mr Mandela’s case, he started serving his five-year sentence at Pretoria Local Prison after he was sentenced on 7 November 1962.

The date – 27 May – is significant in that it marks the 50th anniversary of Nelson Mandela first arriving on Robben Island as a prisoner.
