President Jacob Zuma visited former President Nelson Mandela in hospital in Pretoria today, 27 June, and was informed by the medical team that Madiba’s condition has improved during the course of the night. He remains critical but is now stable.

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 saw the launch of the fourth Nelson Mandela International Day at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Houghton, Johannesburg.

Unanimously adopted in 2009 by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly as Nelson Mandela International Day, 18 July, Nelson Mandela’s birthday is an annual call to action to people everywhere to contribute to the global movement for good by effecting change within their community.

18 July 2013 marks the 95th birthday of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, and the fourth Nelson Mandela International Day.

After Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in 2008, where he said “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now,” Mandela Day was born. The United Nations officially declared 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day in November 2009.
