To commemorate International Human Rights Day and the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a panel discussion was held on December 10, 2007 at the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

The roundtable discussion was organised by the SAHRC in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Nobel laureate Prof Wangari Maathai delivered the Third Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture on July 19, 2005. She called for Africa to “rise up and walk”, noting that only an empowered Africa could extricate itself from poverty and despair. She called disempowerment “perhaps the most unrecognised problem in Africa today”.

The 2007 Annual Nelson Mandela Lecture was delivered by Mr Kofi Annan on Sunday July 22 at the University of Witwatersrand’s Education Campus in the Linder Auditorium. It was attended by a wide-ranging audience of about 1 500 invited guests.

Making Peace: Photo gallery

Making Peace was launched at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in July 2007. The exhibition explores the relationship between former ANC presidents and Nobel Peace Prize recipients Chief Albert Luthuli and Nelson Mandela through pictures and text. It is a celebration of the legacies of Chief Luthuli and Mr Mandela.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation, in partnership with UNAIDS and the Human Sciences Research Council, hosted a satellite session at the 3rd South African AIDS Conference in Durban, on 6 June 2007.

The objective of this session was to reflect strategically on the nature of the response to the disease in the past 25 years and engage in an in-depth prospective appraisal of possible future interventions that are required to respond to the epidemic in the next 25 years and beyond.

Prisoner in the Garden: Photo Gallery

Prisoner in the Garden, the first exhibition launched at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, opened on September 21, 2004. The exhibition shares Nelson Mandela’s personal prison archive with the world, portraying Mr Mandela’s prison life under apartheid through the disclosure and interpretation of original prison documentation. The work is produced in collaboration with the National Archives.

On March 16, 2005, Prisoner in the Garden launched at Constitution Hill, where it is now on show as a permanent exhibition.
