Community Conversations: speaking from the heart

The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Dialogue for Justice programme represents a continuation of conversations held in communities since late 2007.

A highlight of the programme, the Community Conversations were a partnership between the Foundation and the German federal government’s German Society for International Co-operation (GIZ), and were launched in 2008 as a response to the outbreak of xenophobic violence in South Africa.

The dialogues facilitate in-community talks on key issues affecting social cohesion, including xenophobia and violence, HIV, drug abuse, and women and youth issues.

Gallery: First Mandela/Fidel Legacy Dialogue

Hundreds of people gathered in Unisa’s ZK Matthews Great Hall on Tuesday, 25 February 2014, for the first of three Mandela/Fidel Legacy Dialogues, which celebrate the close relationship between Nelson Mandela and Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

At the event the documentary film Mandela and Fidel, by acclaimed filmmaker Estela Bravo, was screened.

This was followed by a question-and-answer session in which Bravo, former South African ambassador to the US Barbara Masekela and Cuban ambassador to South Africa Carlos Fernandez de Cossio answered questions from the audience.

The second Mandela/Fidel Legacy Dialogue will be held later this year in Cuba, and the third again in South Africa.
