Community conversations booklet
In this booklet we document the progress made through community conversations in South Africa in 2009.
In this booklet we aim to document the progress made through community conversations in South Africa during 2009, share the lessons we have learnt and encourage others to consider the methodology, perhaps adapting it to their own local conditions. This booklet also shares some invaluable personal reflections by those who participated in the process.
In 2007, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and its partners began a series of community conversations on HIV/AIDS. These dialogues, held around South Africa, continued through 2008, helping people to break the silence around the disease, challenge mindsets, build a network of support and, ultimately, contribute toward the behaviour change necessary to stop the spread of HIV and the advancement of AIDS.
The Foundation’s vision is for communities to identify their own concerns, develop their own strengths and implement their own solutions.
All this starts in a safe space where people can reflect deeply, talk openly and begin to trust themselves and each other.
