Comics Exhibition

The Nelson Mandela Foundation, in collaboration with Umlando Wezithombe Publishers, has created an interactive exhibition on the making of the Madiba Legacy Series of comics. The exhibition teaches youth about the process of making a comic and introduces them to the technology involved in the process. They are invited to watch the comic artists doing their work and are given a chance to create their own comics. The youth are introduced to the skills and career path of the visual arts, while also learning about Mr Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy.

This exhibition is staged at the annual Cape Town Book Fair each year. It is also used to as a vehicle to educate communities about Mr Mandela’s legacy and promote sustainable interest in arts as a career. In October 2006, it was staged at the Samora Machel commemoration in Mbuzini, Mpumalanga, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the tragic death of the late President Samora Machel and 34 of his colleagues and comrades. Minister of Arts and Culture Dr Pallo Jordan opened the exhibition, and during his speech he noted:

“The comics exhibition has only been seen in public once before and that was at the Cape Town Book Fair so it is very fitting that it is now here, in one of our most remote rural areas.” Full speech

Since then, the exhibition has also travelled to Klerksdorp, where local schools were invited to get involved and produce their own artistic displays for the exhibition. The result was a dynamic interaction of learning about Mr Mandela and youth exhibiting their interpretations of him.
