Call for Expression of Interest for NGOs to implement Community Conversations on HIV/AIDS
20 May, 2011– The Nelson Mandela Foundation, in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, calls on experienced non-governmental organisations capable of implementing community dialogues in all South African provinces to submit Expressions of Interest.
Please submit substantive expressions of interest, the company profile and Curriculum Vitae of the individual to be responsible for the assignment to Molly Loate at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or call at 011 547 5600 for inquiries. Closing date for applications is 5 June, 2011.

Nelson Mandela Foundation publishes final 2010 community conversations booklet
14 June, 2011 – In 2007, the Nelson Mandela Foundation launched the community conversations programme, with the aim of facilitating discussions around the “burning issues” that concerned communities across the country. HIV/AIDS is without doubt one of the most serious challenges the country faces today, and this became the focus of the community conversations programme.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation concludes community conversations on World AIDS Day
December 13, 2010 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation completed the third and final year of the HIV/AIDS community conversations programme with a series of World AIDS Day dialogues. This year the South African theme for World AIDS Day was “I am responsible. We are responsible. South Africa is taking responsibility,” and the Foundation commemorated the day by hosting community conversations in all nine provinces.

Community builds house for orphans
September 17, 2010 – Three orphaned teenage girls have a roof over their heads after conversations facilitated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s dialogue team led the community of Giyani, in Limpopo, to build a four-room house for them.
Substance abuse and insufficient medical support top community conversations agenda
June 28, 2010 – During May and early June of this year a series of Nelson Mandela Foundation community conversations were held in towns representing six provinces across South Africa.
Common concerns emerging from some of these communities included drug and alcohol abuse, unprofessional treatment by clinic nurses and a shortage of clinic and medical staff.

May 11, 2010 – “I had a boyfriend who didn’t value my opinion; whatever he said went. When the relationship started, we did not trust each other so we used a condom, for a while. Eight months into the relationship, we just stopped using condoms without even knowing each other’s status.

December 1, 2009 – As part of its ongoing work with communities throughout South Africa about the awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS, the Nelson Mandela Foundation convened 120 dialogues this year – 12 conversations in 10 communities in all nine provinces.

Dec 1, 2008 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation has published a booklet describing the series of 10 community conversations on HIV/AIDS around South Africa in 2008.
In his foreword to the booklet, Foundation CEO Achmat Dangor writes: “The 2008 dialogues held in 10 community settings have created a body of knowledge that policy makers, scientists and activists will certainly find useful. Most importantly, these dialogues have helped the local participants to confront that “unspeakable” presence in their midst: HIV prevalence and AIDS mortality. They now have the potential to be empowered and to act decisively.”
Skills passed on to community conversations facilitators
Nov 17, 2008 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation convened a community conversation run by newly trained facilitators at Soshanguve, in Gauteng, yesterday.
“Community conversations” is a Nelson Mandela Foundation initiative aimed at facilitating dialogue about HIV/AIDS within communities.
