30 46664 concert in Rio de Janeiro
About the Event
46664 is a global HIV/AIDS campaign that was started by Nelson Mandela in 2003. It aims to raise global awareness about HIV/AIDS and encourages individuals to learn their HIV status.
The 46664 concerts use the power of music to spread the message “it’s in your hands”. 46664 global ambassadors perform, and all proceeds from the concert go towards community-based HIV/AIDS projects, as well as community outreach activities aimed at preventing HIV infection. Artists perform for free at the concerts, becoming ambassadors for the cause.
As part of Mr Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations, the 46664 Concert Honouring Nelson Mandela at 90 will take place in Hyde Park, London on June 27.
46664’s annual concert commemorating World AIDS Day on December 1 will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on November 30.
The first 46664 concert took place in Cape Town, South Africa on November 29, 2003. Since then, concerts have taken place in George, South Africa (2005); Madrid, Spain (2005); Tromsø, Norway (2005); and Johannesburg, South Africa (2007).

22 Malibongwe Dialogue
About the Event
The Malibongwe Dialogue is an annual event organised and hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Centre of Memory and Dialogue. The Malibongwe Dialogue seeks to remember, through dialogue, the role of women in South Africa’s history.
The first Malibongwe Dialogue was hosted last year at Mandela House in Johannesburg. The event honoured four veterans of the apartheid struggle: Sophia Williams-De Bruyn, Amina Cachalia, Rica Hodgson and Ntombemhlophe Bam. The dialogue was convened around an exhibition entitled Malibongwe: “We thank the women”, a collection of black and white photographs of women activists which was curated by the Apartheid Museum.
To read more about the event, visit the news story “Nelson Mandela hosts veteran activists”. You can also download a copy of the booklet produced after the event: “Malibongwe igama lamakhosikasi / Praise be to women”. To see photographs of this event, visit our gallery.
This year’s Malibongwe Dialogue will take place on August 22 in Johannesburg. Attendance at the dialogue is by invitation only.
